Power LEDs can consume large amounts of power, and concise power control of these circuits is essential. It is not just drivers that can make up the power management solution; DC/DC converters are often used in parallel or place of dedicated drivers. Alongside these devices you will almost certainly require voltage regulation, usually in the form of a switching regulator or low power LDO regulator.

Other power management ICs affecting the performance of the LED include current monitors and, if portable, battery gauges. Power discretes such as MOSFETs, optoisolators and fast acting diodes can offer protection against current surges.
